The USAAC needed an aircraft capable of flying very slowly for observation and control of the battlefield and the autogyro seemed to the ideal solution. However, it was soon discovered that these aircraft lacked the performance necessary for military applications and due to the inability to hover they were soon superseded by the helicopter. The O-47 was an observation fixed-wing aircraft used by the Army Air Corps and intended as a replacement for earlier observation biplanes. Note the windows in the belly to overcome the obscured visibility from the wings for downward observation and photography. Proving flights demonstrated the O-47 was too large and heavy and it was soon relegated to duties such as towing targets and coastal patrol. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF as 37-328 in the markings from the 112th OS of the Ohio NG, but it is actually ex 39-112.

The J-1 was a two-seat primary trainer and, although similar in appearance to the JN-4, was more difficult to fly and so never gained the popularity of the legendary Jenny. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF has had the fabric covering on the fuselage removed to illustrate the wire-braced wooden construction typical for aircraft of that time.

The Jenny became the US's most famous WWI training aeroplane and by the time production ended more than 6,000 had been delivered, the majority of them JN-4Ds. After WWI, hundreds were sold as surplus to civilians with many Jennies continuing flying into the 1930s. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF.
