This A-7 was flown on 18th Nov. 1972 by Maj. Colin A. Clarke on a nine-hour rescue support mission in SE Asia for which he received the Air Force Cross. This aircraft arrived at the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1992. The Skywarrior in the background is one of the few regrets about my visit to NMUSAF as I just couldn't get a shot of it that I was happy with.

The C-60 was the most numerous of the Lodestar variants operated by the USAF. This example was TOC by the USAAF in 1943 but went to the French post-war and served in Algiers as F-BAMA. It returned to the US around the mid-fifties and flew with various private owners (last reg. as XA-SEX) before arriving at the National Museum of the USAF for preservation and display.

This B-57 was originally assigned to wright-Patterson AFB as a test aircraft but was returned to combat configuration in 1967 and flew with the 8th BS in Vietnam for more than two years. After returning to the US she was converted to an electronic counter measures EB-57B version and was retired to the National Museum of the USAF in 1981. This Provider on display at the National Museum of the USAF was accepted by the USAF in 1957 and saw extensive service in Vietnam as a 'Ranch Hand' sprayer (possibly the most ill-conceived and reckless program ever devised by the USAF). The aircraft took almost 600 hits in combat so was named 'Patches' for the damage repairs that covered it. In addition, seven of its crew received the Purple Heart for wounds received in the line of duty.

The O-1 was developed from the commercial Cessna Model 170 (originally designated L-19s) and were used by the USAF, Army and Marine Corps for such tasks as artillery spotting, front-line comms, medivac and pilot training. In SE Asia they were also deployed on FAC duties but they were slow, lacking range and proved vunerable to ground fire. This led eventually to their replacement with O-2 Skymaster and OV-10 Bronco. This Bird Dog came to the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1971.

In reality this is 49-1067 but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in the markings of the plane flown by Lt. Col. Bruce Hinton of the 4th FG. On 17th December 1950 he became the first F-86 pilot to shoot down a MiG.
