The USAF developed the HH-3E 'Jolly Green Giant' to perform combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions to recover downed Airmen during the SE Asia War. The HH-3E was a highly modified version of the CH-3 transport helicopter, being the first air-refuelable helicopter and incorporating armour plating, defensive armament, self-sealing fuel tanks, a water-tight hull and a rescue hoist. This particular aircraft has earned her retirement at the National Museum of the USAF after long and distinguished service in Vietnam.

This is in fact 43-49507, the last C-47 in routine USAF service and arrived at the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1975. It is painted to represent the C-47A flown by 2nd Lt. Gerald 'Bud' C. Berry of the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron, 439th Troop Carrier Group, to recover gliders used in the D-Day invasion. On 22nd March 1945, Lt. The B-45 was a plane of many firsts; the first US four-engined bomber to fly, the first US production jet bomber, the first jet capable of carrying a nuclear bomb and the first multi-jet reconnaisance aircraft to refuel in midair. This example was flown to the National Museum of the USAF in 1971 and wears markings of the 47th BW (light).

The T-6 made its name as a trainer but was rapidly pressed into service at the start of the Korean War in the role of a forward air controller (FAC). The FAC T-6D 'Mosquito' version performed well but was retired by the USAF as single props were thought to be unsuitable for these missions in the jet-age, a decision that was quickly reversed in Vietnam. This Mosquito flew with the 6147th Tactical Air Control Group in the Korean War and was eventually acquired by the National Museum of the USAF in 1995.

As one can guess from the folded-wingtips this was a Naval Zero and painted to represent a section leader's aircraft from the aircraft carrier 'Zuiho' during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, March 1943. This plane was discovered near the city of Kavieng on New Ireland, Papua New Guinea and after restoration was placed on display at the National Museum for the USAF in 2004.

This shot gives some idea of the size of the truely cavernous halls that comprise the National Museum of the USAF as even a B-52 is dwarfed. This B-52 is a Vietnam veteran and was severely damaged by an enemy surface-to-air missile on 9th April, 1972. It arrived for display in Nov. 1978.

'City of Sacramento' on display in the Southeast Asia War Gallery at the National Museum of the USAF. This EC-121 entered the history books on Oct. 24, 1967 over the Gulf of Tonkin as it guided a US fighter into position to destroy a MiG-21. This action marked the first time a weapons controller aboard an airborne radar aircraft had ever directed a successful attack on an enemy plane.

This Thud was delivered in 1964 as a standard F-105F and subsequently joined the 355th TFW in combat missions over Vietnam claiming three MiG kills. In 1970 it was fitted with ECM equipment and joined the 388th TFW for 'Wild Weasel' duty attacking enemy SAM sites. In 1972 the aircraft was modified to the improved F-105G configuration and is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in the markings worn while assigned to the 561st TFS based at Korat Royal AFB, Thailand in 1972-73.

The RF-101 was the first supersonic photo-reconnaisance aircraft and this particular example was one of the planes responsible for obtaining the images confirming that the missiles sites were being dismantled and so brought an end to the Cuban Missile Crisis. It subsequently served with the 45th TRS in Southeast Asia and then the 153rd TRS at Key Field, MS from where it was ferried to the National Museum of the USAF during Oct. 78 for display.
