The FJ-2 Fury was developed as a swept-wing, carrier capable fighter from the F-86 Sabre (the similarities are evident). Of 200 built very few are extant and this one is displayed at the National Naval Aviation Museum in the markings of an aircraft assigned to the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, although, in reality she was based for her entire service life in California and Hawaii.

HO5S was the navy designation for the S-52 and 87 examples were procured for the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. Although it was used in Korea as a scout, observation and medevac helicopter the HO5S was always something of a stopgap until the more advanced designs that superseded it came along. Now on display at the fantastic national Naval Aviation Museum.

It is hard to put into words the wonderful time I had at the National Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola. I wish that I had been able to schedule an extra day in order to visit without my camera to enjoy and learn from all the superb exhibits and multimedia displays. The Sioux is probably most familiar to me as the H-13 from TV's M*A*S*H fitted with stretcher carriers. Learning all about the type's Navy service would have been interesting but there was just no time.

In 1940 it was clear that the US Navy would have to increase dramatically the number of pilots that were being trained. A varirty of types were used for this purpose and amongst them were 305 Falcons. This example, of what is a very rare type, now hangs in the magnificent National Naval Aviation Museum.

In 1940 it was clear that the US Navy would have to increase dramatically the number of pilots that were being trained. A varirty of types were used for this purpose and amongst them were 305 Falcons. This example, of what is a very rare type, now hangs in the magnificent National Naval Aviation Museum.

This priceless two-seater trainer version was captured intact in Northern Germany and after WWII sent to the Armament Test Division, NAS Patuxent River for tests and evaluation. Later she was used as the template for reverse engineering newbuild machines on the the 'Me-262 Project'. In return she was restored to this immaculate condition and, although the link to Naval aviation may be a little tenuous, I was more than thrilled to see her at the National Naval Aviation Museum.

This 'Bamboo Bomber' is painted with green engine cowls and sash to represent a JRC-1 Navy WWII era trainer and is on display at the wonderful National Naval Aviation Museum. It carries a fake serial (63426 was a Vought F4U-4 Corsair), and never served with the Navy. Ex USAAF 43-7995, then civil as N63426.
