Despite appearances, this is not the orignal VH-UXY which was an Airspeed Envoy belonging to Charles Ulm and lost at sea near Hawaii in 1934. This aircraft is the more common 'B' model of the Hornet Moth with square wing-tips and was built in the UK in 1937. It was imported to Australia in 1979 and took up this 'period' registration.

Getting ready for the day's flying at the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's Annual Fly-in. The dry Australian outback is a funny place for an amphibious aircraft you might think, but just down the road is Lake Boga which was used as a flying boat maintenance base during the Second World War.

This historic aircraft was the first Moth to be exported from the UK, being first registered in Australia as G-AUAE on 5 November 1925 to the Civil Aviation Branch, Department of Defence. It was re-registered as VH-UAE in 1930. In later years it was re-built to DH-60G standard and is preserved in immaculate condition today as one of the oldest aeroplanes still airworthy in Australia.

This aircraft was the first production Griffon powered Spitfire. It is seen here in the colours of the Indian Airforce with whom it served. It was acquired by the Commemorative Airforce in 2004 from the Museum of Flight at Santa Monica Ca and is currently grounded for an engine rebuild. Note also the B25 Mitchell in the background which is being refurbished in this cluttered hangar.
