In July 1986, nine F-16s of 322Sqn were based at Gilze-Rijen due to runway works at Leeuwarden. At that time, Gilze-Rijen's main runway was not in use either, so all flying operations took place from the short runway 20. The taxitrack leading to runway 20, at that time, was very close to the fence.

It always pains me that if it had not gone tech on arrival (not this day, but another time at East Midlands) I would have flown on it, positioning to Coventry. Sadly, I never got another opportunity.
