This 1939 airframe did not come to New Zealand until 1957. Reportedly named Spirit of Tasman Bay, ZK-BUT was the last Electra flying in New Zealand until damaged here on 18 February 1959 as the right main landing gear collapsed on arrival from Nelson. The aircraft is statically preserved at the MOTAT in Auckland, painted as ZK-AFD Kuaka of Union Airways. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Designed by Charles Seibel, Cessna's only helicopter looks like it was intended for flying to church on Sunday, but the CH-1 actually broke a world altitude record and the US Army tested it as the YH-41 Seneca. Apparently it had serious technical issues as Cessna tried to buy back the circa 50 examples built and to have the type certificate revoked. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

These monsters were frequently seen in the 1960s overflying westbound from Mildenhall (EGUN). The deep never-to-be-forgotten sound they made could rattle the windows from 25,000 feet up. This one caught fire while being refueled on 13 July 1963 at Dover AFB (KDOV) and was subsequently scrapped.

Carries spurious 'DC-6C' marking on the fin, but this was actually built as C-118A 53-3282 which suffered a landing accident then was rebuilt by Slick Airways in 1957. Written off on 22 February 1960 when it landed 1200 feet short at Elmdorf AFB (PAED) during a GCA approach. (The captain used the wrong rpm, manifold pressure and flap settings.)

VH-USJ was still in use as a backup to a Cessna 180 when Don Ende took this rare colour photo. The aircraft is now back on the Australian register after being restored in New Zealand.
