The Bendix Model K prototype initially flew with an uncovered fuselage and later with a fully enclosed, egg-shaped fuselage. By January 1947 it was in this form, with an open cockpit. Oddly the Model K and the larger Model J were apparently both named Whirlaway. Bendix Helicopter closed its doors in 1949. NX41817 then went to NACA for rotor research work according to a NASA document. An end date for this is not known to us. Photo from: NASA Langley

The Paraplane used the "Vacuplane principle" in which the airflow was directed through wing slots to reduce pressure over the upper wing area, thus allowing slow flight and STOL performance. Redesigned as the Paraplane II in 1953. Registration cancelled in 1958. The slogan on the side says "Every field an airport". Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

A17-716 being used to test the storpedoette, a small version World War 2 storpedo. An Australian invention, the storpedo used a small parachute to slow the descent of a canister designed to absorb shocks. It was cheaper than a conventional parachute but offering more protection than dropping with no chute at all. The storpedoette was for smaller aircraft than the storpedo required, in particular to deliver critical medical supplies accurately. A17-716 was sold in civil buyers in 1955.
