The Fi 167 was designed as a torpedo bomber for Germany's projected aircraft carriers. The type passed through testing very successfully but, since the carriers were never completed, only about a dozen Fi 167s were built. Most ended up in a Croatian unit in 1944. Photo from: Bundesarchiv

The Arado Ar 95 was rejected as a shipborne scout for Germany's warships. Despite this V3 prototype's registration, it was probably a much better aircraft than the Heinkel He 114 which turned out to be a failure. The Ar 95 was offered for export, but this demonstration in Norway did not yield an order. Meanwhile the lighter, faster Ar 196 monoplane was accepted for the embarked scout role - a questionable decision because in this role, robustness and seaworthiness were far more important than performance. What makes this photo unusual is the Australian National Airways logo. UYB was owned by ANA but the ANA logo on the fin has been changed to AOA aka Airlines of Australia. ANA owned AOA which continued to operate as a separate airline until 1942 on services north of Brisbane. Ross Plains airport was opened in 1930. Postwar the RAAF aerodrome at Garbutt became Townsville's civil airport. Photo from: Townsville City Library

The catalogue caption to this photo says the aircraft belongs to Victorian and Interstate Airways. However it did not acquire VH-UJV until 1940 and besides had "VIA" painted on the fin. In 1938, when the photo was supposed to have been taken, UJV was based at Deniliquin, not far from Eurolie Station. The logo cannot be deciphered but it had previously been operated by the Life Science School of Applied Psychology, which likely explains the aircraft name. UJV was impressed by the RAAF in July 1940. Photo from: State Library of New South Wales

Five Wellesley single-engined long-range bombers were modified to Vickers Type 292 standard for the RAF's Long-Range Development Unit, with changes including low-drag long-chord cowlings. L2680, centre, and L2638 set a new world distance record in November 1938, flying from Egypt to Darwin, Australia. L2639 landed in Kupang, Dutch Timor, but also broke the previous record. The aircraft then continued to Australia, made an emergency landing while touring the country and ended up in the RAAF as an instructional airframe.

Year approximate, probably close. We wondered about the cyclist visible in photo 359967, thought to have been taken in Vancouver. But bikes were clearly popular in this forward-thinking city. Photo by: James Crookall / City of Vancouver Archives
