The D.338 prototype, first flown on 9 August 1935. Following modifications, it was bought by Air France, making its first revenue flight from Paris - Le Bourget, where this photo was most probably taken, to Lyon and Marseille on 13 July 1936. F-AOZA was involved in an accident at Martimprey du Kiss (now Ahfir), Morocco, on 30 June 1942, but apparently repaired and destroyed by the RAF at Toulouse in the night of 4 April 1944.

ABPic has a photo of this aircraft attributed to 39 Sqn. Also, looking at the badge on the tail, although very blurred, it looks more like 39's winged bomb than 11's double eagle. Repaired, K2091 went on to serve with the Indian air force. Photo from: Norman Melrose

Built in 1932, this was a long-range racer or mailplane which carried all fuel and payload in the wing and was therefore called a flying wing. It did not quite meet designer Claire Vance's expectations and its long-distance flights didn't happen. See other photo for original configuration - the two-seat nacelle dates this photo circa 1936. According to some the aircraft was not actually named Viking, but Flight magazine did call it that when it was entered in the London - Melbourne race. It did not eventually take part. The W-1A was a developed version of the Weick W-1, a homebuilt design intended to fit with the 'safety plane' program of the early 1930s. The original was sold to NACA who, after wind tunnel testing in their Langley facility wind tunnel, contracted for a new version as the W-1A. This new variant replaced the fixed slot forward of the wing used on the original aircraft with large trailing edge flaps. Photo from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
