The identity of this Noratlas is uncertain. It is one of Israel's three early N.2501IS aircraft. 4X-FAP, 4X-FAQ or 4X-FAR, and almost certainly ex 4X-FAP. It flew supplies from France to Israel just before and during the Suez Crisis in 1956. As can be seen it carried El Al markings with registration 4X-ALH, but it was never actually registered as such, nor operated by El Al. Indeed it is seen here at the front in the Sinai, one day after Sharm el Sheikh was captured by Israeli forces. Location assumed to be the modern airport site. Attached to United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) as a communications aircraft, this flight was about to depart to JRS via AKR at a very early time in November. One of a number of CAF aircraft that provided a very efficient and reliable service between the various Capitals in the area at that time.

The Do 24 entered Luftwaffe service as an expensive rescue asset - the equivalent of today's heavy combat SAR helicopter. As such it saw action all around Europe. Built on the Dutch Do 24 production line, CH-EV was delivered to Seenotstaffel 7 in Athens in December 1941. It was damaged by Allied naval gunfire in this small Egyptian port on 12 August 1942, and declared a Totalverlust (total loss) on 28 August. The Allies retook Mersa Matruh during the Second Battle of El Alamein early in November. Photo by: MD Elias/Alexander Turnbull Library

What is known about this aircraft is that it served with the Royal Flying Corps before being transferred to 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. The soldiers appear to a mix of Australian light horsemen and New Zealand mounted riflemen. 1 Squadron's role was to work closely with Australian and New Zealand mounted soldiers and this photo would appear to be from that period. The caption says Egypt but may be Palestine (Israel). 4332 was withdrawn from use at the start of 1917. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
