The real 49-1236 shot down a MiG-15 over Korea on 17 December 1950 (when operated by 334th FIS), and later was shot down itself by a MiG-15 near Sinanju, North Korea on 24 October 1951. Another fake 49-1236, in exactly the same markings and colours, is preserved in the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Oh. The real identity of the latter aircraft is known (49-1067). This Sabre is preserved at the military golf course adjacent to the airbase of Suwon. Its identity is a headache. USAF 50-625 is an F-86E (MSN 170-47) that was w/o in Japan on 20 January 1954. That aircraft does have a link with Korea as it was credited with shooting down two MiG-15s over Korea, on 30 November 1951 and on 14 January 1953. Perhaps is was this latter fact that was the reason to paint this serial on the aircraft?
