Crop of original photo with an H-5G, 48-528 on the right. According to the original caption, the Skymaster was transporting troops from this undisclosed airbase to a more advanced airbase. Later converted to HC-54D rescue aircraft. Assigned to 57th ARS, Lajes, Azores, it collided with a HC-97G, 52-2773, during filming and crashed into the sea off Bermuda on 29 July 1964. 45 TRS was the only USAF squadron to operate the RF-51D in Korea, although the squadron also had regular F-51Ds. The F-51D had camera ports in the rear fuselage and the pilot could also record what he saw using an AN/AMQ-1A voice recorder. B-26 Invaders in the background. From August 1952 the squadron replaced its RF-51Ds with RF-80 Shooting Stars. 44-84778 is listed as written off on 14 October 1952. Photo probably taken at Taegu or Kimpo. This rescue helicopter is listed as written off after an accident at Walker AFB, New Mexico on 27 May 1950, but it must have been repaired, because this photo is from the Korean War as other pictures of H-5Gs, undergoing open-air maintenance in the background, show more conclusively. Note tail rotor, still made of wood! Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

To our surprise the black S-55 in this nice photo is an early YH-19, one of two tested in Korea. Perhaps the helo is seen in its last hours, since Joe Baugher's website reports: 'With 3rd ARS, crash landed in mudflats near Inchon, South Korea May 2, 1952 after engine failed while returning from evacuation mission. All 3 crew survived and were rescued.' The helicopter did not survive. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland
