This Recruit was originally destined to be a float plane trainer in the Netherlands East Indies. However, the sale fell through after the territory surrendered to Japanese forces in May 1942. It was then used as an USAAF trainer as 42-57481 until declared surplus late in WWII. After many private owners it is now on display in the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Bellanca CF high-wing monoplane was designed by Italian immigrant Giuseppe Bellanca, embracing a completely new vision and design in the early 1920s. Bellanca visualised the CF as a commercial transport aircraft but it was too far ahead of it's time before any market really existed. Only this example was built and it is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

With this aircraft the famed racing pilot Roscoe Turner became the only three-time winner of the Thompson Trophy (his first win in 1934 was in a different aircraft). He retired from racing to manage the Turner Aeronautical Corporation in Indianapolis until his death in 1970. This racer hung in a prominent place from the rafters of his main hangar until restored and placed in the Turner Museum. With the closing of his museum in late 1972, the racer was gratefully received by the NASM.

The Horten Ho-229 (often called Gotha Go-229 due to the identity of the chosen manufacturer) was a German prototype fighter/bomber design approved by Göring late in WWII and is recognised as the first pure flying wing powered by jet engines. This is the only surviving Ho 229 airframe, the V3, and is now awaiting restoration at the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Note the that T2-490 code was attributed by the Office of Air Force Intelligence after arrival in the US.

'Flak-Bait' survived 207 combat missions over Europe, more than any other American aircraft during WWII and is currently undergoing restoration in the Mary Baker Engen Hangar of the Udvar-Hazy Center. The Baltimore factory completed the aircraft in April 1943 and the USAAF assigned it to the 449th BS, 322nd BG. Lt. James J. Farrell of Greenwich, CT flew more missions in 'Flak-Bait' than any other pilot. He named the bomber after 'Flea Bait', his brother's nickname for the family dog.

The Ar-234 Blitz was the first operational jet bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. It's first combat mission, a reccie over the Allied beachhead in Normandy, took place on 2nd August, 1944. Although less famous than the Me-262, the Ar-234s that reached Luftwaffe units provided excellent service. On display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, this is the sole surviving Ar 234 B-2 and served with bomber unit KG76 from Dec. 1944 to May 1945 when British forces captured it in Norway.

I don't normally bother too much with sport planes but the Sorceress has such an unusual shape that it deserved to be photographed. Now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

This Type XII, on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, is a very significant early airplane, being a prime example of pre-WWI aeronautical technology. Most American aircraft produced during this period were direct copies of Wright, Curtiss or European machines. Benoist was one of the very few US firms building and selling original designs during this pioneer era. This aircraft was built by the Korn brothers in St. Louis in 1912 and donated to the NASM in 1949.

Of all the larger exhibits at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center I presumed beforehand that this Shuttle would interest me the least. However, once actually up close to 'Discovery' I was completely starstruck, just trying to comprehend fully what it had experienced and what it had achieved was quite awe-inspiring.

This Tomcat on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum was built as an F-14A but was one of 18 upgraded to Super Tomcat D-configuration in the early 1990s, designated F-14D(R) for rebuild. This aircraft flying CAP with VF-32 from the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) is credited with one MiG-23 Flogger kill which was earned on 4th January, 1989 off the coast of Libya.

The XO-60 represents the final evolution of the Autogiro before the type became obsolete. The slow loitering speeds and almost vertical takeoff and landing abilities of the XO-60 made it ideal for military observation duties. However, the inability to hover sealed the fate of the Autogiro after the development of helicopters. This XO-60 was fully restored by the NASM in 1975 and is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.
