Built by the Loughead brothers to a US Navy specification. Lost out to Curtiss and the F-1 was rebuilt as a landplane, the F-1A. It crashed on the first leg of a transcontinental flight and was rebuilt as a flying boat once again. Used for joy flights in the summer of 1919 until sold to the owners of an amusement park on Catalina Island. However the F-1 remained on the beach at Santa Barbara until it succumbed to vandals. Loughead was a Scottish name pronounced Lockheed and that spelling was later adopted by the brothers.
